On August 16, 2024, the G20 Favelas made its presence felt at the Rio Innovation Week, a premier Latin American event focused on innovation and networking. The talk, titled “Globalizing Impact: The Potential Role of G20 Favelas in Governance and Fighting Hunger”, brought together experts to explore practical, scalable solutions for global challenges.
The panel featured Gabriel Oliveira, International Relations Coordinator for G20 Favelas; Elaine Caccavo, CEO of InFavela and Vice President of CUFA Rio; and Manoel Soares, presenter and journalist. The speakers highlighted how the favelas, through their innovative social technologies, can influence governance models and help develop impactful strategies to fight hunger.
Rio Innovation Week serves as a key platform for connecting innovation, business, and social change. The participation of G20 Favelas reinforces the importance of including favela perspectives in international discussions. These communities are not just recipients of support but active agents in creating solutions that address structural inequalities. G20 Favelas, with its global network spanning 41 countries, directly contributes to topics that will be presented at the G20 Social, amplifying the voice of marginalized communities at a global level.
The discussion emphasized the need for a collaborative, multi-sector approach to addressing hunger. The speakers stressed that integrating favela-led initiatives into broader policy frameworks is essential, as these communities offer unique, localized solutions that can be scaled globally. CUFA, along with other partners, organizes Conferences in favelas to ensure grassroots proposals align with international agendas.
The presence of G20 Favelas at Rio Innovation Week is a significant recognition of favelas as catalysts for social innovation and equity. The event continues to provide valuable opportunities for dialogue, connection, and the strengthening of initiatives that empower marginalized communities. Through consistent engagement, G20 Favelas aims to keep occupying strategic spaces and influencing policies that promote social and economic justice on a global scale.
